  ΑΘΗΝΑ Athens is one of the go-to cities in the world for foodies. Tasting Athens means full engagement of the senses, ergo sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter and savoury, as we include over a dozen dishes (not just ten) that reveal the full complement of Athenian flavours. Cosy tavernas that have been serving locals for decades are in our sights, as are cult street food stops when we're moving through the downtown. Ouzo plays its part near the end of the tour as does a glass of Nemean wine at half time. We set off with toasted sesame breakfast rings and our aromatic "Easter ✝ bread" staple, then honey-soaked doughnut shapes and dark roast coffee, before a slice of spinach pie and the #1 that everyone adores - lamb, potato, onion, fresh tomatoes and tzatziki in a baked pita wrap. Before the wine we indulge in feta cheese pastries! The second part returns to the sweet with milk custard and orange dessert cakes, then a flaky favourite that has been around for 3,000 years. Tender meatballs flavoured with mint, oregano and parsley accompany stuffed tomatoes on a big Greek plate (green salad, olives) that readies the finale. We pick up baby squid or fried fish that you'll eat on the move before tucking in to skewered meat and grilled vegetables.
